Starcraft 2 RacesThe following is a short Starcraft 2 races overview but covering the most important aspects to help you choose.
Terran Race Overview
Terrans have been kicking around the Koprulu sector for centuries. Their ancestors crash-landed there and had to survive with whatever they got. Arcturus Mengsk formed the Dominion, a government built on tyranny and oppression. But not all Terrans followed Mensk; some of them fought for their freedom. Terrans may not have the advanced technology of the Protoss or the adaptability of the Zerg, but the fact that they stick together as a team and care for each other right down to their last member, makes them a force.
It all starts with the marines, stubborn grunts, mostly convicts. Marines can handle about anything fate throws at them. Sometimes they're backed up by tough-looking Marauders or a pack of jumpy Reapers. As support, they have the fast Helions and the devastating Siege Tanks. The Terrans aren't pushovers in the air either: Banshees can sneak up on the ground forces and unleash hell, while Vikings can surprise an enemy by switching from air form to assault walker. Last, but not the last ones when it comes to the air, are the Mediavacs. Their ability to transport troops in the middle of the battles might force some unprepared players to shed some tears for their unprotected units. When we're talking about specialized units in this Starcraft 2 races overview, the Terrans have more then a few tricks up their sleeves. Let's take the Ghost for example; a highly trained recon soldier, he can score a head shot from a mile away and can bring massive punishment over an enemy by calling down nuclear missiles. And if that isn't enough, high-tech Ravens can really mess with the enemies' head by contributing abilities that are both offensive and defensive. But in a real tough fight, that's when the big boys come out to play: we're talking about the Thor, a walking death machine that can cut through enemies like the knife through butter. Lastly, if you want to dominate the sky with incomparable fire power, the good ol' Battle Cruisers will do miracles. So if you think you got what it takes to take charge of an army with strong defensive tactics that can still punch the enemies in their guts, sending them crying home to their momma, the Terran is your best choice.
Protoss Race Overview
The powerful and enigmatic aliens called the Protoss were present in the Koprulu sector way before the Terrans arrival. They're pretty fanatical when it comes to their believes and they spent thousands of years developing advanced technology. Despite all that, they couldn't stop the Zerg from overrunning their home world, Air. Many of them gave their lives to defend that planet but nowadays lots of Protoss believe they need a radical change in their midst if they are to survive at all, at least for the purpose of this Starcraft 2 races overview. They aren't many left, but don't let their numbers fool you, because their advanced technology makes up for their low numbers. Their warriors are brave and channeling the psionic power the right way can turn the tide in their favor against bigger armies. Their plasma shields are very efficient and can protect them enough to deploy their structures right into the enemy's heart via Psionic Matrix. The backbone of the Protoss army is the fearless Zealot, armed with energy blades that can cut through even through a bunker. Usually the Zealots are backed up by cybernetic organisms known as Stalkers which can teleport through obstacles with a Blink (of an eye). When the Protoss are faced with really heavy fire power, they bring out the badass Immortals, which are resistant to high damage of the tanks and can hold on until reinforcements arrive. The Protoss have the Colossus, a towering robot which can reduce a whole group of marines to ashes, again in a blink. Technology is one thing, but for the Protoss, the power of the mind can be the most dangerous weapon of all. The High Templar uses psionic abilities to blast whole groups of enemy units, while the stealthy Dark Templar can go on a rampage kill, in and out, before anyone notice they were there. The Protoss fleet is were their engineering really shines: the Phoenix can outmaneuver about anything that flies, while the highly focused Void Ray and the Carriers with their drone interceptors will give even the most advanced enemy ships a run for their money. But the fact is, not much else on the battlefield, compared to the Mothership. With its abilities to warp the fabrics of space and time, this colossal ship really is a weapon of mass destruction. So if you're looking to lead an army with stunning technology and mind blowing psionic abilities, what you're looking for is the Protoss.
Zerg Race Overview
The Zerg are any intelligent species' nightmare! Highly evolved, biological killing machines, the Zergs function as a whole and are controlled by a hive mind, the Overmind. Zergs are like locusts: sweeping across the galaxy from one planet to another, leaving behind only death and destruction. Nowadays, the Zergs got themselves a new ruler - a sexy ruler by all human standards - that goes by the name Queen of Blades. She used to be a Ghost, someone Jim Raynor cared a great deal. The scariest thing about the Zerg is that, no matter how many you kill, they just keep coming. They can overrun and infest an entire planet in what just seems like a blink of an eye (again with the blink, Jesus!). Queens oversee their main structures of the Hive and act like generals directing the troops. The Terrans like to pride themselves as capable to adapt to any situation, but the Swarm takes the adaptability concept to a whole new level. Constantly evolving, some Zergs can regenerate their wounds, while others can mutate and adjust to the ever changing field of battle, as you will learn next in this Starcraft 2 races overview. Zerlings are the Swarm's hounds of war. They may look small, but these little monsters can tear a marine apart faster than he can empty his Gauss riffle. As if that wasn't bad enough, Zerlings also have the ability to mutate into acid-filled living bombs, Banelings. When Zerlings get beaten by heavy fire power, the Hive reacts by sending out the Roaches to reinforce the front lines. Hydralisks can tear enemies apart with armor-piercing spines and are sometimes backed up by Infestors, which have the hideous ability to turn the enemies against themselves. Mutalisks are the terrors of the sky for being able to shred trough multiple targets with a single attack. When going against capital ships, they send in the Corruptor, designed to take out enemy fliers only. If need be, the Corruptor can mutate into Brood Lords, long-range cannons with ground attack only. But by far the biggest Zerg badass of them all is the Ultralisk, which might as well be called Ultrakiller, because once he's unleashed into the battlefield, not many will live to tell the tale. So if you got the stomach to guide a highly adaptable and ruthless alien army to victory, you might be ready to lead the Zerg.
